Church Signs

Do you think it is possible that the goofy marquee messages on church signs could actually be keeping people FROM COMING to church?  I think the Kingdom of God would be better off without marquee church signs.

  • God reads “knee-mail”
  • CH_RCH – the only thing missing is U
  • Feel taken for granted?  Imagine how God feels.
  • Turn or burn…  (I prefer shake n’ bake)
  • Our church is better than your church
  • Wal-Mart is not the only saving place
  • Read the Bible – it will scare the hell out of you
  • Under Same Management for 2000 years
  • Members expected; guests welcomed
  • If you have a tattoo or a nipple piercing…STAY OUT! (O.K…I’ve not actually seen that one :-) )

  1. I know people mean well with the marquees…. But, they definitely need to go. Our cleverness (or, lack thereof in some cases) is not what changes lives. It’s 100% God.

So, let’s have a marquee t-p party. The church seriously needs to lighten up and get the focus off tradition. Gotta shake it up from time to time.

    Tattoos and/or nipple piercings welcome. :o )

  2. Oh….And, on the subject of tattoos….

“Tattooed men who are not behind bars are either latent criminals or degenerate aristocrats. If someone who is tattooed dies in freedom, then he does so a few years before he would have committed murder”.
(Adolf Loos, 1962 Ornament und Verbrechen. Samtliche Schriften, edited by F. Gluck. Vienna: Herold, 1962

Nice to know that once I get my tattoo I’m dooming myself to a life of violence, rebellion and hatred….

So, even if I have all sorts of metal hanging from my face and some ink blots on my body, you’ll still love me?

  3. JR – nice quote!! That’s got to be a classic. I’ve wondered where all of those urges have come from lately…now I know.

  4. Those signs are just like bumper stickers… I have yet to read one that moves me to think or do something different.

My vote: the marquee must go.

  5. Ah yes. The stupid, ’sounds-like-it-was-born-in-a-fortune-cookie’ marquees. I can’t think of anything more off-putting to add to the front of a church. The only things worse are those qoutes on billboards that say equally stupid things like “I’m Watching You – God” or “What part of Thou Shalt Not didn’t you understand – God”.

  6. Thank you!
