My Weekend @ the Movies

I saw several movies this weekend (one at the theater and two via rental).

My dad called Saturday morning and asked if I wanted to go see Ben Stein’s documentary/propaganda piece called Expelled.  It was very interesting.  I would have loved to see this movie with a group of my scientist / atheist / creationist / religious fundamentalist friends.  The conversation afterwards would have been very insightful.  The documentary contends that in scientific circles (especially in the academy) there is a suppression of thought that would point to intelligent design as a legitimate option for explaining the origins of existence.  I especially enjoyed Ben Stein’s interview of Richard Dawkins (author of The God Delusion and an Atheist Fundamentalist).  I would recommend the movie and I’m curious among scientists if Ben Stein’s theory would be affirmed or denied.

Second, saw the movie Juno.  LOVED IT!  Was about a teenage girl who gets pregnant.  I loved it for a couple of reasons:  1) It is real.  Represented the struggle of thought well and didn’t feel like it was trying to push anything other than the real emotions of a Junior in High School trying to deal with the consequences of actions.  Real.  2) Loved the character of Juno.  Ellen Page was awesome!  Sharp wit.  Sarcastic.  Very funny.

Third, saw Amazing Grace.  I know it has been out forever…but I just saw it.  Story of William Wilberforce and his struggle to convince the British Parliament to outlaw slavery.  Very powerful.  Excellent movie.

  1. Lindsey and I are going to see it. The thing I love about Ben Stein is the fact that he has a BA in economics at Columbia University. After graduating with honors from Columbia in 1966, Stein went to Yale Law School and he graduated as the class valedictorian in 1970. The guy is a freakin genius.

  2. Because I didn’t go to church Sunday morning, I was home to see Ben Stein’s piece on CBS Sunday Morning. He said he wants his tax dollars to go toward helping the dogs and cats that are being abandoned due the the mortgage and foreclosure crisis. I agree!!! It’s not their fault somebody bought a house he couldn’t afford! He also had some great things to say in a piece he did during the gay republican senator bathroom thing. He’s awesome even though I don’t always, or even often, agree with him. Go Ben!!

  3. I even bought Juno9actually Ed did). Excellent movie. I really liked Ellen Page also. Want to see Expelled.

  4. Amazing Grace was boring to me. But the Bishop loved it so much he burst the theater with tears.

  5. I think Ben Stein is the greatest human in America, and I’m going to write his name on the presidential ballot this November. I LOVE Ben Stein! He isn’t just intelligent – he gives away money like it’s toilet paper. He sticks up for people who are underdogs. He defends religions of all kinds. He’s conservative, generous, and doesn’t act anything like the other Hollywood idiots. And I can’t wait to see Expelled.

  6. “Amazing Grace,” what a movie. Boo hoo hoo hoo hoo. Boo hoo hoo hoo. I can’t stop crying.
