When I Take Over the World…

Posted: August 7, 2009 in Schools

When I have successfully taken over the world, the following, in regards to school, will be implemented:

  1. It will be considered illegal to attend school in the months of June, July, and August.  School will begin after Labor Day weekend and dismiss before Memorial Day weekend.  I think it obscene that kids are already having to think about going back to school.  Isaac starts next week!!!
  2. To not lose educational time, the school day will be extended to at least 3:00 p.m. I think it crazy that our elementary children get out at 2:20 p.m.  To go home to what?  What a stain on families and parents who have to work!
  3. A handful of Half-days will be reinstituted as they: a) provide opportunities for conferences between parents and teachers; b) allows space for additional training for teachers; and c) gives students a reprieve.
  4. Every school will have a dress code and parental involvement and volunteerism at each school will be mandatory.
  5. I will dramatically lower the drop out rate by giving students a choice…you can either continue in school and graduate with a diploma or you can go to a hard labor camp in Siberia.

Just a reminder to bring your school supplies for Monroe Primary Center (who by the way has the greatest % poverty among their students than any other school in the South Bend School Corporation…yea…the one that is just a block and a half from our church!) this coming Sunday, August 9th!!

Buy out all the stores!!!  Leave nothing left.  :-)

This Sunday we begin a new three week message series:  Discovering Christ.  Using some of the popular T.V. shows from the Discovery Channel as a backdrop, we are going to delve (I like that word) into biblical truth.  Don’t miss it.  Bring a friend.

Last week Ann Lynn and I spent a week with about 20 junior high students from Living Stones Church at the Michiana Christian Service Camp.  IT WAS A BLAST!!  I just love this age group!  It is exhausting (meaning…thrilled to get home Saturday morning) but TOTALLY worth the week’s investment.

  • Best collective group of junior high kids I’ve ever been around (I’m not sure there was a single behavioral issue ALL week…with 105+ junior high campers…INCREDIBLE!)
  • Great team bonding opportunities for the Living Stones Church junior high youth group (next year I bet we could send 40 kids!!! :-) )
  • Justin Gramza and Tyee Calhoun were baptized Saturday morning.
  • Watched God work powerfully among the entire group drawing them to Himself.
  • Always amazing how intense a week of camp can be and the quickness of relationship that gets established.
  • Loved getting to meet adult faculty/staff from other churches as well as some kick-butt junior faculty that won my heart!!
  • Jody Healey (youth minister at the North Liberty Church of Christ) and his team did a great job.
  • Was in a “family group” that consisted of 18 women and two guys…me and my buddy Alex!  Yea…that is a lot of estrogen!!
  • I was on family group team #6 – The Woo-Hoos (as in a cheer).  Loved working with the other faculty in our group – Chris Carroll (who, come to find out, also teaches at Monroe School), Emily Bowen, Michele Delp, Holly Klopfenstein, Stephanie, and of course Ann Lynn.
  • Had sponge dodgeball, capture the enemy flag (suffered a injury to the knee…I’m too old to be diving at kids), pool parties, bowling nights, shaving cream and water balloon fights, etc.
  • Ambushed the guys the last night.  We told them they were going to go serenade the girls’ cabins and then we gave each a water balloon making them think they were going to pull a fast one on the girls.  Little did they know that we (faculty) told the girls they were coming and gave them far more water balloons.  Then, we locked them out of their cabins when they retreated and from the roof tops other faculty members got them with super-soakers, water balloons, buckets of water, hoses, etc.  Ahhh…the fun of camp!
  • Mary Harsch received more mail at camp than any camper in the history of campers…ever!! :-)
  • Because of my proclivity to steal walkey-talkies and my compulsive urge to say goofy things with them…there is a chance I will not be invited back to camp next year. :-)
