If I Were Mayor

It’s time to play, “If I Were the Mayor of South Bend…”

If I were the Mayor of South Bend, I would…

release an Assistant Mayor and triple the size of Code Enforcement.

  1. The Bishop says:

I would give the South Bend Tribune a $2.5 million tax abatement to build a new press building, install a new printing press, and eliminate 18 of the 20 press jobs. Oh wait, that was done in the mid-90’s when Mayor Luecke was the City Council President. He also ruled a certain remonstrator out of order when he pointed out that all nine members voting for that abatement had just endorsed each of them for re-election three months previous and one of the Council members should recuse himself because he was a retiree of Schurz Communications. But, obviously, that’s water over the dam and Hizzoner has learned how to better administer our local goverment. Oh wait, that’s the point of this exercise. In that case, if I were Mayor Luecke, I would resign my office, ask Mishawaka to annex the city, and make a sign that says “Will Work for Food” and stand on the corner of Michigan and Ireland during peak traffic hours.

  2. The Bishop says:

Passion overrules proof-reading. The foregoing should have said that the Tribune endorsed each of the nine Council members voting on it’s tax abatement request. No quid pro quo intended.

  3. sister says:

    Dad said dam. Hehehehe.

  4. Edward says:

Its hard to argue with that assessment. I suppose a good suggestion would be to actually admit that SB is a city with a significant crime problem.

A city with a LOT of vacant houses that create blight and lowered property values, and I would create programs and incentives to prevent this.

Code Enforcement would have teeth. I would do like the person suggesting this post and drive around the downtown area and actually look at how many properties actually PAY taxes instead of being exempt properties (hint: there is not a lot of taxpaying properties).

I would get out of Joe Kernan and Bauer and Butch Morgan’s pockets and cut off all the buddy-ism that is plaguing this area.

I would have no problem being transparent to the media, because I am not hiding these things.

Oh and to GET to being mayor you need more than under 16,000 voters in the city of 102,000 to VOTE out the one who is in there now.

  5. Lorinda says:

Edward, I would vote for you.

  6. Edward says:

Thanks! Maybe I could run. I only need 12,000 votes.. thats less than 10% of the voting residents..

    maybe I SHOULD run..

  7. Memaw says:

I think South Bend is too close to Chicago and is taking on the smell of the corrupt political machine that plagues Chicago.

I’m glad I live in Mishawaka that is blessed with a progressive young mayor who seems to have the interests of the city at heart.
